While many dentists offer basic alignment treatments, you will want to see an orthodontist for specialized corrective oral care for your teeth. Braces can help correct crowded or crooked teeth, misaligned teeth or bite, and help create an adjusted, beautiful smile.
Traditional metal braces have been around for many years. They are the standard among patients looking to straighten their smile. Traditional braces are made of exceptionally strong metals as they need to be able to stand the test of time while they are on your teeth.
Metal brackets are cemented to the fronts of your teeth. Wires are placed between the brackets and secured with small bands, which create pressure to straighten and align your teeth. The small bands come in many colors, which you can choose to help spruce up your braces style!
The pressure from traditional braces is normal and can be uncomfortable in the beginning. As your teeth adapt to the adjustment, the feelings of any discomfort or pain will go away. When future appointments require adjusting as well, you will experience a tightening sensation as new pressure is placed to help straighten your teeth. This feeling goes away after a few days and pain from traditional braces is uncommon.
It is important to take special care of your teeth while wearing metal braces. You will want to:
· Brush, floss, and rinse with certain toothpastes, floss or mouthwash. We will help explain which types will help benefit your routine to help protect your metal braces.
· Avoid certain foods that can break your brackets or wires such as nuts, sticky candies, popcorn, raw veggies, bagel, chips, hard fruits, or tough meats.
Traditional braces are typically worn for one to three years, with the average being 22 months. The time frame varies from patient to patient, but depends on how severe your problem is, how much room is inside your mouth, the health of your teeth, and how closely you follow your treatment plan.
